Monthly Spotlight - Anjanette Williams
This month’s spotlight shines on Anjanette Williams, an
entrepreneur who runs three businesses. This month we will shine the light on one of them, The Military Backer Store. The Military Backer Store is an online store where she sells apparel and other gift items for those who support the US Armed Forces. Anjanette was inspired in 2003, during which time her significant other was a member of the
United States Marine Corps. During his deployment to Kuwait in early 2003, Anjanette found the limited forms of communication between them depressing, which made for many sleepless nights. During one of those sleepless nights Anjanette came across the website of the company who now manufactures her products. She started out by creating a simple design and uploaded it to the site and within two days she had sold two pieces with absolutely no marketing involved. From there a business was born. Anjanette thought this would be a great way to pass the time while her Marine was away. Originally her store was geared toward the girlfriends
and wives of Marines only. She has since branched out to
offer products to cover the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and the general patriotic public. The Military Backer Store celebrated its 4rd year in business in March 2007. Feedback from both current and potential customers is what has inspired her to continue to grow this business. “My customers and potential customers suggest new designs,
products and revisions to current items,” says Anjanette. She relies on their input greatly being that she is no longer active in the military community. The entrepreneurial spirit has been within Anjanette
for many years and this was just the tip of the iceberg for
her as she went on to start marketing two military dating
sites as well. Products from the Military Backer store are sold online at www.MilitaryBacker.com. As she moves forward she is developing products for the reserves. Anjanette is also planning to have a catalog
developed in order to offer her products to buyers for the Department of Defense exchange stores. She is also developing a community for military supporters. Other
requested products she is adding to her line are new designs, license tags, dog accessories, etc. For those who are looking to start their own business, Anjanette has one bit of advice: “Start by thinking about what is your passion. In 2003, my Marine and standing by him was my passion. I was proud with a capital “P” to
be a Marine’s Girlfriend! Pride is a major characteristic you will find in almost every Marine and their closest loved ones and pride is something I definitely possessed. “I have an uncle who was an enlisted Marine during the Vietnam War. If you were to see him, his wardrobe or his car, you would think he had been born a Marine and was still in active duty 64 years later!” While her business has grown from what was an unfortunate situation, she is fortunate enough today to be able to help other Marines and loved ones (and those of the other branches) to show that pride. "Think about the things you love. If you are
passionate about it, more than likely there is an entire segment of the population that is passionate about it as well. Think about the things you would like to see and set forth to making that happen…you may just stumble upon a one-in-a-million idea that could propel you to success and prosperity!
